All Girl Big Band is redefining the big band scene in Christchurch, bringing together 18 talented women in a genre traditionally dominated by men. Delivering what audiences describe as a “powerhouse of sound”, this all-female big band has built a reputation for energetic performances, outstanding musicianship and unforgettable live shows.
Formed in January 2016, the band grew from a conversation between musical director Lana Law and vocalist Kate Taylor. “It had us wondering if we could actually get a big band together here in Christchurch consisting of only female musicians.” What began as a bold and unconventional idea quickly became a reality.
The band made its debut at In the Loop at The Court Theatre as part of the theatre’s “Hidden Artists” programme. Since then, they have enjoyed remarkable success, with regular appearances around Christchurch including performances for the Christchurch Big Band Jazz Festival, the Swingtown Rebels, Jazz Club in the Great Hall, shows at Fat Eddie’s and A Rolling Stone, even opening for a Black Ferns vs Australia game. The band has also played with artists such as Bic Runga and the APRA Silver Scrolls with Delaney Davidson.
Alongside classic swing and big band repertoire, the All Girl Big Band also presents themed productions such as Tribute to Natalie Cole, which debuted during the 2016 Christchurch Big Band Jazz Festival, and The Ages — described as “an unequivocally chilled-out and enthusiastic masterclass in Big Band virtuosity.” This show celebrates the women who have shaped music over the past century. The band has also performed at the Manawatū Jazz Festival, Nelson Jazz Festival and Dunedin Jazz Club.
Comprised largely of professional musicians and music teachers from Christchurch, the band’s “infectious joy of music making” shines through in every performance. Alongside regular concerts and festival appearances, the group has spent recent years touring, recording and continuing to grow its reputation as one of New Zealand’s most exciting contemporary big bands. The band is excited to be performing this year as part of the 20th year celebrations of the Christchurch Big Band Jazz Festival at the Isaac Theatre Royal.
